The gateway to the North
Founded as a railroad village some distance from the old Indian town of San Juan de los Caballeros (now renamed Ohkay Owingeh), it was named Española and officially incorporated in 1925. It has been called the first capital city in the United States.
Española became a city in 1880 when the Denver and Rio Grande Western RailRoad, the famous "Chile Line" arrived. Nestled between the Sangre de Cristos and Jemez moutain ranges, When Oñate and the first Hispano families arrived in Nuevo Mexico in 1598, the world of the first Americans changed forever. The next four hundred years of cultural conflict, compromise, intermarriage, and peaceful co-existence have forged a unique Indo-Hispano character and culture that defines the Nuevo Mexicana today.
